Holly Fulton

'FASHION SHOW PRODUCTION'
EXPERIENTIAL DESIGN IN FASHION

My new obsession with Scottish designer Holly Fulton is indulged during this uni module. These boards explore her vibrant, Art Deco-inspired collections to help me produce a fashion show concept. I'm hoping to present her love of colour, cityscapes and playful imagery in a visually exciting way, including the sparkle of city glamour and spirit of the working woman.

H-M-Z

These fashion drawings by friend and fellow A-Level Textiler Holly Mills-Zivanovic are beautiful and so inspiring with sweeping lines and smokey shading. Studying an Art and Design Foundation at Oxford Brookes University, Holly has included these in a developing collection named -FROST-

PETA Pledge

Today I was wondering which part of the fashion industry I would like to work for.

An hour ago I found PETA's new campaign against the Olsen twins for the use of real fur in their collections for The Row.

I constantly push aside those videos which reveal the ongoing masacre for fashion because they are so painful to watch. I forced myself to watch this one so that one less person would forget about something we feel individuals have no power to stop.

Fashion is about beauty and art. This beauty is found on an animal's coat, but it must remain on its owner's back. Take caution if you are to watch this. Please Pledge to Be Fur Free to discourage animal suffering in fashion.

Welcome To The Dollhouse

The idea of Indie film has become a bit ironic. The idea that something is cool because a modest, selective audience appreciates it, propels it into the mainstream interest due to this exact reason. We can all admit we admire things which are a bit different, dare I say alternative, but I was ignorant to not look beyond these quirky character-driven, simply narrated films.
Indie: An American Film Culture, delving into its history and strategies, made me realise how different this type of film is to the Hollywood blockbusters. More off-beat, yet realistic characters are created. Even their most mundane actions hold more subtle, dark humour as their familiarity can be seen in our own families, friendship groups, classrooms and streets. Being filled with ambiguity, each scene taps into your subconscious sense of curiosity and desire for suspense. Revealing plot or character personalities does not scream explicit meanings or motives like the Hollywood films we put on for an 'easy watch'.

Welcome To The Dollhouse's analysis was admirably presented, I was curious. The unattractive, mis-treated and frankly 'pathetic' protagonist Dawn Weiner is a troubled 7th Grader, bullied by her peers and neglected by her family. Portraying the hardships of adolescence rather than sugar coating it in a teen makeover-themed comedy like Clueless, Dawn's character is endearingly tragic. I found myself laughing out loud at her misfortunes as she herself did nothing else but gawk (think female version of Napoleon Dynamite). Constantly appearing responsible for her own suffering, she is an outsider at school and at home but does little about it due to her pure lack of self-awareness. Floating through a number of occurrences, including her perfect younger sister Missy's kidnap and the rejection of an older love interest (Daniel Meade!), I revelled in her awkwardness.

I almost forgot to mention her truly captivating '90s wardrobe, including floral and animal motifs (note the adorable-yet-worried-looking-kittens jumper). Her Teletubby bum was also highlighted in high-waisted drawstring polyester trackies, generously adding to her heartwarmingly feeble persona.

Craig & Karl

The Fashionable ONES

Best known for creating collage-like pieces to illustrate only the top names (Kanye, Obama and Mickey Mouse), New York/London based artists Craig & Karl have a extensive string of commissioned work which I stumbled upon whilst researching fashion PR. I love the piece above, showcasing the most distinctive images in fashion materialised on 1s. It's so simple, quite comical and definitely fun - main themes in all their creative work.
Craig & Karl's shapes with block colours and simple lines give minimalist representations of brands and people, making the art clear, contemporary and memorable.

This cute gentlemanly brogue illustration also struck me. I can only imagine what conversations they've had throughout the years.

Mr Selfridge

ITV's current costume drama

My Sundays at the moment are not complete without the weekly show giving an insight into the historic founding of the UK's second largest shop, Selfridges. Harry Gordon Selfridge is the charming, but reckless, businessman behind the venture in 1909. Revolutionising the shopping experience which had previously been a private, and mundane activity, making it the thrilling leisure pursuit we recognise today. Considered 'a genius from 9am-5pm, and a fool after hours' by colleagues, Harry Selfridge is entangled in as much seduction in his private life as within his store.

Following other protagonists such as Agnes, a struggling shop floor worker, and Harry's extremely neglected wife Rose, the plot thickens every week and I'm hooked. Luckily there's another 5 episodes to be aired. It has me intrigued as to what the fuss is all about with fellow ITV costume drama Downton Abbey. The outfits and interiors are mesmerising, not to mention the notion of an actual traditional gentlemen, perfect!

Wellibobs

Joules

I didn't even know these funky half-wellies existed. The ultimate outdoorsy chick Joules does them in 13 different patterns and colours for every style of coun'ry bumpkin. Do they share the same horrendous 'inbetween shoe' characteristic as Crocs? I'm not sure but I love them, especially the ones with hares on, aw!

Check out the whole of Joule's wellies range, they're all so pretty, I'd choose them over some Hunters anyday
